Free & Accepted Masons - Louisville, Tennessee
Becoming a Freemason is a rewarding journey that begins with a single step. If you're a man of good character who believes in a Supreme Being and wishes to improve yourself while helping others, Freemasonry may be right for you.
To become a Freemason at George Washington Lodge #181, you must:
Step 1: Make Contact
Reach out to our lodge to express your interest. You can visit us, contact us through our website, or speak with a Mason you know.
Step 2: Get to Know Us
We encourage prospective members to attend social events and meet our members. This helps ensure that Freemasonry and our lodge are the right fit for you.
Step 3: Find Sponsors
Two Master Masons in good standing will need to recommend you. Don't worry if you don't know any Masons - getting to know members through step 2 will help with this.
Step 4: Submit Your Petition
Complete a petition for membership. The lodge will review your petition and conduct an investigation to ensure you meet the qualifications.
Step 5: Lodge Vote
Your petition will be voted on by the lodge members. If accepted, you'll be invited to begin your journey through the three degrees of Masonry.
Freemasonry consists of three degrees, each building upon the lessons of the previous:
There are initiation fees and annual dues, which are used to maintain the lodge and support our charitable activities. Contact us for specific information about fees.
Members are expected to attend lodge meetings (once per month) and degree ceremonies. You can participate as much or as little as your schedule allows, though regular attendance is encouraged.
No, Freemasonry is not a religion. While we require belief in a Supreme Being, we welcome men of all faiths. Freemasonry offers moral and ethical guidance, but it is not a substitute for religion.
The "secrets" of Freemasonry are primarily symbolic methods of recognition and certain aspects of our ritual ceremonies. These traditions help create bonds between members. The true lessons of Freemasonry - brotherly love, relief, and truth - are openly shared.
